
The Sugar, Confectionary, and Chocolates Division of the Chamber of Food Industries held its regular meeting, headed by Eng. Hassan Al-Fendi, to discuss a number of issues related to the Sugar, Confectionary and Chocolates Sector, in the presence of a number of representatives of food companies that are members of the Chamber, on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023.
The head of the division, Eng. Hassan Al-Fendi, said that the factories’ raw sugar needs have been identified and coordination is underway with the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade to discuss the possibility of securing these raw sugar needs until the end of next February.
Eng. Al-Fendi explained that the total needs submitted by members for raw sugar are estimated at about 190,000 tons until the end of the season, and the remaining quantities required are being studied and counted. He called on His Excellency to conduct an inventory check on the factories’ needs for different raw materials for each industry, such as starch, glucose, honey, grains, cocoa, coconut, etc., as well as any consignments imported from abroad at the ports that have not been released, so that the necessary measures can be taken and any disruptions to the supply chains can be prevented.
For his part, the representative of the National Corn Products Company confirmed that there is no shortage of starch and glucose raw materials, indicating that what is currently produced from the starch and glucose industry meets the needs of the local market many times over.
During the meeting, Eng. Al-Shahat Selim, Deputy Executive Director for Government Affairs and Legislation, presented the latest developments in the standard specifications, noting that approval had been given to amending the draft chocolate standard in addition to updating and approving the sugar standard. The representative of the Industrial Modernization Center also reviewed the procedures for granting the “Proudly Made in Egypt” mark and the documents. What is required, the basic criteria for granting it, and the positive impact on companies.
